Reclaiming Africa’s Health Future: A Landmark Visit by the Speaker of South Sudan to Microhaem Scientifics

As Africa charts a bold course toward health sovereignty, partnerships, leadership engagements, and continental collaboration are becoming increasingly vital. It was in this spirit of shared ambition that Microhaem Scientifics (MHS) had the profound honour of hosting Rt. Hon. Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of the National Assembly of South Sudan, for a courtesy visit to our headquarters—a key sideline engagement under the Africa Health Summit (AHS) and Heroes in Health Awards (HIHA) 2025.

Led by our CEO, Dr. Cedric Akwesigye, the visit highlighted MHS’s growing role as one of Africa’s emerging leaders in diagnostic manufacturing, research, and scientific innovation.

A Summit That Defines the Moment

This year’s Africa Health Summit is anchored in the powerful theme:

Reclaiming Africa’s Health Future: From Dependency to Sovereignty Through Innovation and Solidarity.

The Speaker’s visit reflects precisely this continental shift—the movement toward local production, scientific independence, and home-grown health solutions. At a time when Africa is redefining its position in global health, institutions like Microhaem Scientifics are demonstrating what African-led innovation looks like in practice.

A Tour Through Africa’s Diagnostic Future

During her guided tour, Rt. Hon. Kumba visited our state-of-the-art IVD manufacturing facilities, witnessing the full production ecosystem:

  • Research and development pipelines
  • Quality assurance and regulatory processes
  • Automated production lines
  • Innovation labs dedicated to Africa-specific health challenges

Her hands-on experience affirmed what MHS stands for: a future where African science is designed, built, and scaled by Africans.

The Speaker commended the team for building a diagnostic manufacturing capability that is both world-class and grounded in local public health needs—from HIV and malaria diagnostics to emerging research innovations.

A Continent on the Rise—And MHS at the Forefront

Africa’s health future is no longer a distant ambition. It is unfolding now. At Microhaem Scientifics, we believe that the continent’s next leap will be shaped by four pillars:

  1. Local manufacturing capacity
  2. Scientific research and innovation ecosystems
  3. Regulatory strengthening and quality assurance
  4. Continental solidarity and shared commitment

The Speaker’s visit reaffirmed that African political leaders are increasingly ready to champion these priorities—not as abstract ideas, but as actionable strategies.

Driving the Summit’s Vision Beyond the Event

As the Africa Health Summit assembles policymakers, scientists, innovators, and industry leaders, visits like this serve a deeper purpose: they anchor the Summit’s discussions in real, tangible progress happening on the ground.

For MHS, it is not enough to participate in the Summit; we must model the future it envisions. Reclaiming Africa’s health future means building it—kit by kit, lab by lab, innovation by innovation. And we are proud to be playing our part.

A Future Built in Africa, for Africa

The warmth, interest, and encouragement from Rt. Hon. Jemma Nunu Kumba remind us that Africa’s transformation will be led by its people—its scientists, policymakers, innovators, and institutions working together toward health sovereignty.

As we continue to expand our manufacturing capabilities and deepen our research efforts, Microhaem Scientifics remains fully committed to the call made at the Africa Health Summit:

Africa must innovate, Africa must produce, and Africa must lead.

And the time is now.
