Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Commends Microhaem Scientifics for Driving Innovation and Creating Jobs

Microhaem Scientifics had the privilege of hosting Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, at its Ntinda headquarters and manufacturing facility for a strategic engagement with Dr. Cedric Akwesigye, the Managing Director, and the company’s management team. The visit underscored Uganda’s growing capacity to transform scientific research into locally manufactured healthcare solutions.

During the engagement, the team discussed the company’s growth journey, manufacturing capabilities, research pipeline, and future expansion plans. Three themes stood out prominently: Ugandan innovation, the dedication and hard work of the Microhaem team, and the company’s growing contribution to job creation. The discussions highlighted the critical role of science, technology and innovation in building Uganda’s pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity, strengthening national health security and accelerating access to high-quality, locally produced diagnostic technologies.

The meeting also reaffirmed the importance of stronger collaboration between Government and local innovators to accelerate research commercialization, expand local manufacturing and position Uganda as a regional hub for biotechnology and pharmaceutical innovation.

Showcasing Ugandan Innovation

During the tour to the manufacturing plant in Ntinda, the Minister witnessed the production of locally manufactured Malaria, HIV, and Sickle cell diagnostic test kits and later visited Ntinda Phase II and the state-of-the-art Namanve construction site, where the company is expanding into the manufacture of additional infectious disease diagnostics while investing in next-generation molecular diagnostics and stem cell technologies.

The visit showcased Uganda’s growing ability to move beyond importing healthcare technologies to developing and manufacturing them locally, strengthening national health security while positioning the country as an emerging leader in biomedical innovation.

Reflecting on what he had witnessed, the Minister praised Microhaem Scientifics for translating science into practical solutions that directly improve lives.

Beyond the technology, the Minister expressed admiration for the commitment and professionalism of the scientists, engineers, technicians and support staff whose dedication has enabled Microhaem to become a pioneer in indigenous diagnostic manufacturing. He noted that innovation is ultimately driven by people whose expertise, resilience and hard work are laying the foundation for Uganda’s biotechnology industry.

The Minister also recognized Microhaem Scientifics’ contribution to employment, describing the company’s investment in Ugandan talent as one of its greatest achievements.

Over the years, Microhaem Scientifics has created highly skilled employment opportunities for Ugandan scientists, laboratory professionals, engineers, production personnel and other technical specialists, demonstrating that investment in science and technology directly translates into industrial growth, knowledge transfer and sustainable economic development.
